Geeta Repatriated From Pakistan Still Homeless in India

Geeta, who is now 28-years-old, is still looking for her family in India after being repatriated from Pakistan five years ago

The deaf-mute Geeta who was repatriated by Pakistan five years ago is still casting about her home in her homeland, India as she is still homeless and dwelling in a shelter home.

A government managing a population of over 1.3 billion has failed to find Geeta her home after half a decade has passed since she was handed over by Pakistan.

Impaired of speech and hearing, she is unable to express exactly the whereabouts of her childhood.
Partly because of the impairment and partly because she was too young, only eight, at the time Geeta landed in Pakistan via Smajhota Express from India and stranded.

On the land of neighbors considered archrivals, Geeta was well-taken care of by Edhi Foundation where she used to call NGO’s founder ‘Abbu’ like every orphan or abandoned child in the orphanage.

The foundation strived to send her back to India where Geeta originally hailed from.

She was repatriated to India by Pakistan on a humanitarian basis in 2015.

Abdul Sattar Edhi, who ran Edhi Foundation, bid farewell to Geeta with a heavy heart but with hopes that deaf-mute Geeta would reunite with her family in India.

Geeta shares the same name as one episode of the Sanskrit poem of the Hindu epic Mahabharata which holds a high significance for followers of the Hindu religion.

However, the real Geeta is still struggling to find her real home and currently spending her days in a shelter home.

A number of couples came forth and claimed Geeta as their daughter as soon as ex-Foreign Minister Shushma Swaraj urged the people to find her parents along with a reward of INR 100,000.

Geeta, now 28-years-old, has been visiting the Godavari River in the town Basar where she last remembers some spots of her childhood.

After some five-years of repatriation from Pakistan, Geeta’s plaintiveness continues as she still struggles to find her parents even in a connected world and there is no timeline when she will be able to succeed.
