Islamabad police clarify position on FIR against Imaan Zainab Mazari, others

Islamabad police refuted the reports regarding the imposition of sedition charges against Imaan Zainab Mazari, MNA Mohsin Dawar and others.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police department has refuted the media reports regarding the imposition of sedition charges against Imaan Zainab Mazari, the daughter of Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari, parliamentarians including MNA Mohsin Dawar and others.

In a press statement, Islamabad police clarified that the section of sedition was not included in the First Information Report (FIR) against MNA Mohsin Dawar and other parliamentarians.

The statement read that the protestors were asked to limit their demonstration to National Press Club. The protestors had rejected to hold dialogues with the Islamabad administration and started confrontation with the police officials.

Several police officials got wounded in the confrontation that led to the registration of an FIR against the protestors, it added.

The police department’s spokesperson clarified that the nominated persons in the FIR included only those who incited people and violated the law but sedition charges were not imposed against any of the parliamentarians.

Earlier on Thursday, it emerged that the Islamabad police had registered a case of sedition against human rights activist and lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari after she took part in Baloch students’ protest outside the National Press Club on March 1.

According to Geo News, hundreds of Baloch students had staged a sit-in outside the press club. Imaan Mazari and Member of National Assembly Mohsin Dawar had also joined the sit-in.

In a bid to disperse them, the Islamabad police had baton-charged the protesters.

A case of sedition was registered against Imaan Zainab Mazari, Dawar, and hundreds of Baloch students for “rebellion, rioting, and raising of anti-state slogans,” the report said.

A first information report (FIR) had been registered against the suspects at the Kohsar Police Station in Islamabad.
