KP Passes Long-Awaited Domestic Violence Bill

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly has passed the long-awaited bill to curb domestic violence against women on Friday.

As per the details, the bill advocates to protect women against domestic violence and states that the violator will be jailed for five years.

Financial and mental pressures on women will also be considered as a form of torture.

Provincial Minister for Social Welfare Hisham Inam Ullah Khan tabled the bill to protect women from domestic violence in the KP assembly and maintained that it includes punishment for sexual abuse, psychological abuse, economic abuse, and stalking.

While talking to News360, KP Minister of Law Sultan Muhammad Khan has claimed that domestic violence against women is not only against the spirit of Islam but also a violation of national and international law.

“Earlier to this, there was no effective law for them at the provincial level, however, it has come into existence now”, he added.

The female members of the cabinet have also expressed their contentment towards the bill and are in hopes of a depletion in the number of domestic violence cases against women.

As per the bill, a six-member District Protection Committee will be formed that will be responsible for providing medical aid, shelter, and reasonable assistance to the victims.

Besides, a helpline will also be established to report incidents of domestic abuse.

The secretary of the committee has been instructed to report all the incidents and to provide them legal aid.

In case of a reported incident, an application will be submitted to the court within 15 days and the adjudication has to meet a conclusion within two months.

The long-awaited bill has been appreciated by the civil circle as well as they believe that this law would go along way in curbing the violent acts against women in KP.
