Madonna: Madame X – Tour Doc Prostrates Itself Before Queen of Pop

Madonna's new documentary about her Madame X tour is now airing on Paramount+. But if you don't have Paramount+, your ears can still experience it.

The documentary begins with James Baldwin’s old quote about artists here to disturb the peace, along with a montage of the many controversies that Madonna has sparked throughout her career.

There’s the strange outrage it sparked in the Like a Virgin era; the video Like a Prayer with its flaming crosses, stigmata and kisses of a black saint; the New York Post is dedicating its cover to an open story in which it uses the headline “WHAT A VAGUE!” proclaimed the “degenerate queen of misery”.

Of course, the Madame X tour also created discomfort, but not from Madonna’s traditional conservatives who clung to their pearls. Completely disappeared for the following week and the next. There have been claims that ticket sales have been slow for his series of residencies in the theater.

Before Covid put it to a premature end, the tour itself was littered with canceled dates – 16 total – thanks to the troubles and injuries of the singer, who insisted that the schedule might be too tough for his own good.

In the US, there were reports of fans booing her for being hours late on stage – in the US, an enterprising member of the audience tried to sue her curtain and turned on the house light, which led the singer to shut scream “Fuck you, motherfucker! Censorship! Censorship!”

Interestingly, it was filmed in Lisbon, the singer’s adopted home and one of the few places in the world where Madonna recites a series of songs with Portuguese lyrics inspired by Fado; A whole section of the show was dedicated to them – it’s guaranteed to be just like Madonna’s singing, let’s say Hung Up or Into The Groove.

You admire Madonna’s desire to focus artistically and rephrase her music as explicitly political, while wondering if Madame X’s songs are really good enough to deserve so much attention.
