Malicious campaign starts new social media war between PTI, PML-N

A malicious campaign based on religious hatred against Imran Khan turned into a social media war between PML-N and PTI.

ISLAMABAD: A malicious campaign based on religious hatred initiated by a Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz leader Javed Latif against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan has turned into a social media war between PML-N and PTI.

Javed Latif had levelled serious allegations against Imran Khan’s religious beliefs and called him a supporter of Ahmadis (Qadianis) in a press conference. He alleged that Imran Khan’s government helped Ahmadis or Qadianis get new energy as their activities in Pakistan increased during the PTI regime.

The PML-N leader further alleged that a professor along with a group of students of a Lahore university travelled to Rabwah under an official protocol to show solidarity with Ahmadis, whereas, Imran Khan sought West backing by showing his support towards Qadianis by giving them religious freedom in Pakistan.

The video spread like wildfire on social media, starting a malicious campaign against Imran Khan and PML-N top leaders.

Later, a statement came from PML-N’s Maiza Hameed added fuel to the fire after she used extremely insulting remarks against Imran Khan. She raised questions about the funding sources of the PTI that allowed Imran Khan to hold massive public gatherings across Pakistan.

Just after her statement, the PTI and PML-N supporters started a social media battle by using insulting and malicious hashtags against each other.

Commenting on the situation, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) governments will lodge FIRs against PML-N central leaders and federal ministers Javed Latif, Marriyum Aurangzeb, MD PTV and others. He said that the FIRs will be registered for running a malicious campaign against Imran Khan based on religious hatred by the PML-N’s strategic media cell.

Analysts said that the scariest part of the malicious social media campaign by the supporters of both political parties was using remarks and allegations based on religious hatred that could give severe consequences and disturb the law and order situation. They also criticised the government for using state media to air the religious hatred remarks of Javed Latif.
