Malir Expressway Route Goes Heavily Encroached

WEB DESK: The foundation for Malir Expressway has not been laid during the second week of November. Instead, the land grabbing has spurred as the government has announced to pay compensation to affectees for acquisition of 1,400 acres land.

Sindh government had announced to lay foundation of Malir Expressway project, worth Rs 39 billion, in November this year.

However, it has not been done so far.

Meanwhile, the encroachment mafia is building artificial embankments on both sides of Malir riverbed which is narrowing course of natural water stream.

From areas of Quaidabad to Qayyumabad, the encroachment mafia is active and progressing gradually to bring more area under its control every passing day.

Besides this, a private organization is working with heavy machinery on riverbed near DHA Phase-VII to occupy 213 acres land worth billions of rupees by levelling it with sand.

It has been going on for past two weeks amid silence of the provincial government.

The Proposed Routes

The proposed routes of Malir Expressway passing through localities including Shah Faisal Colony, Azeem Pura, Qaiadabad and Malir are also under heavy illegal occupation.

News360 also observed that that the dike along the water stream from Manzoor Colony to Defense View is being levelled by filling sand.

Sindh government, apparently, has turned a blind eye to the complete issue.

Well-placed sources told News360 that the encroachment mafia works during wee hours at three different spots along Malir riverbed. The width of the water stream has shrunk due to establishment of artificial embankments.

Sources added that the deputy commissioners (DCs) of three districts including Malir, Korangi, and East are silent over the encroachment underway.

It is notable that the Sindh government had formulated a plan to add 300 acres land from Qayyumabad to Defense by filling sand in dry part of Malir riverbed in 2013.

However, the project was turned down after different international organizations opposed it.
