Maryam Nawaz apologises, deletes insensitive tweet on Arshad Sharif

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz has apologised and deleted her insensitive post on the slain journalist Arshad Sharif which drew widespread condemnation.

Maryam Nawaz retweeted a tweet which claimed that Arshad Sharif had mocked the circumstances of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s mother and termed ‘a lesson for mankind that all people must imbibe.

Maryam’s tweet drew widespread condemnation from journalists, politicians and activists. Arshad Sharif’s widow tweeted, “Have some shame Maryam and fear God.”

Kenyan journalist Kathy Peterson wrote, “Maryam Nawaz represents the very worst of Pakistan!”

In London, the PML-N VP did not comment after a journalist questioned about her insensitive tweet.

“My tweet was NOT aimed at mocking someone but about learning our lessons from the past. I am undoing the tweet & apologise for the hurt it may have caused to the aggrieved which never was my intention. May no one ever have to go through this pain. Prayers for the bereaved family,” said Maryam Nawaz after deleting her previous tweet.

Senior journalist, TV anchor and YouTuber Arshad Sharif was killed in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on Sunday night. Arshad Sharif is one of the renowned investigative journalists of Pakistan who covered major political events in the country for national and international media outlets.

Kenyan police said that the journalist was shot in the head and killed by police after he and his driver allegedly breached a roadblock. The police claimed that Sharif was shot dead in a ‘mistaken identity’ case.

The body of the slain journalist Arshad Sharif was flown to Islamabad early Wednesday via a private airline plane. The body was received by the family, journalists and political leaders at the Islamabad airport.

After Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, the family of the slain senior journalist Arshad Sharif termed his death ‘target killing’.

The funeral prayer of Arshad Sharif late will be offered at Faisal Mosque Islamabad while he will be laid to rest on Thursday in the federal capital.
