The Modi government had introduced the controversial agriculture laws in September last year, deregulating the farm sector. The laws allowed farmers to sell crops to buyers beyond government-regulated wholesale markets.

Small growers said the controversial laws will make them vulnerable to competition from big business. We will eventually lose price support for crops like wheat and rice, they added.

On the other hand, the Modi-led government had claimed that the reform of the agriculture sector will result in new opportunities and better prices for growers.

Modi admitted that his government had failed to convince the  farmers protesting against the agriculture laws.
