Senior journalist and The Friday Times founder Najam Sethi has blamed the military establishment for the ongoing political and economic uncertainty in the country.
In a virtual conference with other journalists including Murtaza Solangi and Raza Rumi Ahmed, Najam Sethi expressed his views that the real cause of the ongoing political and economic uncertainty is the military establishment.
“At this time, the actual discussion is elections as the Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa wants to conduct general polls now. He comes under pressure from Imran Khan’s advancements. If this is the reality, then you remained silent when they [Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government and former premier Imran Khan] were ousted and what are you willing to do now.”

“Are you going to favour elections? What do you want to do now? And the decisions would not be taken in the four months. Or, you are willing to see unpopular decisions from this government to pave way for its ouster to save yourself? It will not go well in this way.”

“Military establishment and Imran Khan are now wholesomely responsible for this situation. If Imran Khan stops destabilising this country, then the present government can find a way to stabilise the economy before conducting elections next year.”
“But Imran Khan wants to regain power immediately with the intervention of the military establishment which is impossible. However, the situation can be turned to new elections.”
Detailing the complexity of the crisis, Sethi said, “If you are willing to go for fresh elections, then which foolish person will go for these decisions to see the backlash and losing the polls. I think this is an interesting situation that politicians are always declared responsible for all crises.”

He added, “In my opinion, the current situation of confusion, anarchy, division and uncertainty is only created by the military establishment and it is not taking any decision so far to bring certainty in the country.”
