Pakistan hockey team’s foreign coach resigns for not getting salary for one year

Siegfried Ekman from Holland was appointed as head coach for 5 years in December 2021, dispute between Pakistan Sports Board and Hockey Federation caused his salary to be delayed, 4-member committee was established to oversee affairs of the federation

Pakistan’s national sport of hockey is in decline and its destruction can be gauged from fact that Hockey Federation did not pay head coach of Pakistan Hockey Team, Siegfried Ekman, for a year.

Foreign coach resigned from his post after a year of patience.

Confirming his resignation, Siegfried Ekman said, “I have not been paid for a year, and I had no other choice.”

Siegfried Ekman from Netherlands says that many promises were made to me but not fulfilled, now I had to move on, so I made this decision.

He says that I wanted to fulfill my commitment but it was not possible. Siegfried Ekman was appointed as head coach in December 2021 for 5 years, his tenure was to end in 2026. Siegfried Ekman was an experienced coach who led Japan’s hockey team to the Asian Games title in 2018.

Issue of Siegfried Ekman’s compensation was pending due to a dispute between Pakistan Hockey Federation and Pakistan Sports Board. A four-member panel headed by PSB Director General Shoaib Khoso has been formed to review performance of the Pakistan Hockey Federation and suggest future steps. The committee includes former Olympians Akhtar Rasool, Shahnaz Sheikh, and Islahuddin Siddiqui.
