PDM’s New Charter of Democracy: Confrontation or Reconciliation?

Most of the opposition parties distanced from PML-N after its aggressive course

WEB DESK: The actual narrative of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is still ciphered as the political parties in the coalition are yet to sign a charter to follow the course after unsubstantiated statements against state institutions were heard from its rows.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Bilawal Bhutto had also revealed in an interview that he was shocked at Nawaz Sharif’s narrative too.

Awami National Party (ANP) also showed repulsion after Nawaz Sharif’s addresses in PDM’s rallies.

However, in the latest development, PPP Chairman while addressing the PDM meeting via video-link suggested that the opposition’s coalition must focus on its objectives. He recommended that PDM should not open new battlegrounds.

Similarly, ANP leader Amir Haider Khan Hoti advised the opposition leaders to stay a bit polite while addressing public gatherings. He even warned that the people following the narrative of PML-N would face similar repercussions as the ANP had faced after following a similar narrative.

However, Maulana Fazalur Rehman of Jamiat-e-Ulema – Fazl (JUI-F) maintained the stance that why the name of an employee of an institution could not be taken in a mass gathering when the prime minister and president could be discussed publicly.

Therefore, to converge all point of views of different opposition parties, the PDM has decided to sign a new charter of democracy.

For this purpose, the meeting of the PDM Leaders conference will be held on November 14 after all 11 parties in the coalition would submit their suggestions a day before.

The charter of PDM would revive the memories of the first Charter of Democracy signed between PML-N and PPP in 2006. However, it will soon be known whether the PDM’s new narrative would manifest Asif Zadar’s reconciliatory model or it would represent Nawaz Sharif-inspired confrontation.
