Riots erupt amid allegation of Quran desecration in Charsadda

Protesters destroyed Mandani police station, four posts and residential quarters of police.

After alleged burning of the Holy Quran at a mosque, riots broke out in Charsadda district. Protesters destroyed the Mandani police station, four posts and residential quarters of police yesterday.

Police resorted to aerial firing and teargas shelling, injuring a man.

The protesters managed to enter into the compound of the police station and torched over a dozen vehicles and motorcycles. They also destroyed official record at the police station, forcing police to vacate the station. The mob also took away the seized weapons.

Later, the protestors set on fire a police checkpost in the Dhaki area, Ziam post of the Omarzai police station, Sha­koor post and Jamalabad post in the limits of the Mandani police station.

The  protesters demanded that the accused be handed over to them.

Additional police personnel from Mardan and Nowshera districts had to be called in to handle the protesters.

Police said that the accused who had allegedly set the Holy Quran on fire was immediately arrested. They added that the accused had been shifted to an unknown location.
