Sang-e-Mah: Pashtun journalists criticise fuelling misconceptions about jirga

Some Pashtun journalists have criticised Hum TV drama serial Sang-e-Mah for spreading misconception about jirgas.

Some Pashtun journalists have criticised Hum TV drama serial Sang-e-Mah for spreading misconception about jirgas as one of the episodes portrayed the pronouncement of flogging to an accused by a tribal elder over alcoholism.

Naimat Khan, a senior journalist from Arab News shared the video clip of Sang-e-Mah in which a tribal elder pronounced flogging to a man for consuming alcohol.

Naimat Khan wrote on Twitter, questioning when a jirga pronounces flogging to an accused of consuming alcohol in Pashtun society.

He then asked the actors, Atif Aslam and Hania Aamir to raise the same question before the writer of the Sang-e-Mah, Mustafa Afridi.

Khan’s comments sparked a debate on the veracity of Sang-e-Mah’s storylines which revolves around a Pashtoon family.

Fahad Malik argued, “It not about Sharaab / Alcohol. He did Ghag [a man’s announcement for his intention to marry a particular woman]. He was punished for ghag, which he did under influence of Alcohol. This was story.”

Sang E Mah: Do you know the history of dotted chaddar wore by Zargona?

To this, Naimat Khan clarified, “No sir! He was supposed to be punished for Ghag but since Hilmand Khan (@itsaadee) argued that one cannot be punished while under the influence of alcohol and accused confessed he was drunk was then punished with 120 flogging for SharabNaushi. Plz watch.”

Mehmood Jan Babar termed it a result of incomplete research work to learn the cultures and traditions of Pashtuns. He was of the view such misconceptions should be taken to the courts.

Sumaira Khan also slammed the negative portrayal of Pashtuns, saying, “I refuse to accept this drama as representing our Pashtun culture in true spirit… A total falsism on Pashtuns.”

Awami National Party (ANP) Secretary of Youth Affairs Tariq Afghan said he brought up in a tribal family where he witnessed many jirgas but physical punishments were never given to anyone.

Hum TV’s new drama serial Sang E Mah was written by Mustafa Afridi and directed by Saife Hassan, featuring the story of a Pashtoon family.
