Threat letter: Judicial inquiry needed after interior minister’s statement

Threat letter, Judicial inquiry, interior minister, rana sanaullah

ISLAMABAD: The need for a judicial inquiry into the alleged threat letter has increased after the statement of the interior minister Rana Sanaullah as he claimed that the former ambassador Asad Majeed Khan had admitted before the National Security Committee (NSC) that he did not write any letter based on US conspiracy.

Following Sanaullah’s statement, the letter should be independently investigated by the Supreme Court (SC) to penalise the responsible persons.

Yesterday, Sanaullah said during a Faisalabad that the former ambassador Asad Majeed had publicly admitted in the National Security Committee (NSC) that he did not write any letter based on US conspiracy.

According to the interior minister, the former envoy said that the words of his diplomatic cable have tampered with as there was no mention of conspiracy or no-trust motion in his letter.

Sanaullah said that it showed that the cable came to the foreign ministry and Shah Mehmood Qureshi altered its content it under his supervision to add the word of intervention to it.

He also claimed that he has an answer to Imran Khan’s public gatherings which will be given at an appropriate time. Rana Sanaullah said that if he came to Islamabad, I would welcome him.

The issue of the lettergate related to the US threat has overshadowed Pakistani politics as earlier, the former premier Imran Khan had demanded an independent inquiry into the threatening letter through the judicial commission of the Supreme Court, and now the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Sirajul Haq and Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) have also demanded an inquiry.

The issue of the letter came to light on March 27 when former prime minister Imran Khan addressed a public rally and the letter came out to the public.

Addressing the rally at the Parade Ground in Islamabad, the PTI chief had waved the threat letter and said that a conspiracy was being hatched to change the government by using foreign money and a threatening message was sent to them.

He claimed that he was not making any allegations but the letter in his possession was proof of his statement.

Imran Khan said that he has a number of things related to the foreign conspiracy which will be revealed at an appropriate time.

Political analysts said that Rana Sanaullah’s statement has made it even more imperative that an inquiry into the diplomatic cable should be conducted by the Supreme Court’s judicial commission as per Imran Khan’s demand.
