Tumblr has Banned a Long List of Harmless Tags, but Why?

In December 2021, Tumblr found itself at war with Apple. presence of Tumblr in App Store was at stake. So what is the story?

In an effort to create a slightly more familiar environment and community for Tumblr users, Tumblr app for iOS now prevents users from accessing inappropriate content through several different investigative channels. This includes a long list of labels that most people would consider completely harmless.

Tumblr’s search algorithm has been modified to restrict certain types of “restricted content.”

According to Apple’s Security Policy, access to shocking, offensive and controversial posts and topics on Tumblr through its iOS app will be severely restricted, at least for the time being.

How will Tumblr iOS differ in the future?

The purpose of this effort is to prevent impressionable young people from accessing content that could be harmful to them. The change has only occurred on iOS, so only iOS users will notice that something has changed.

The three main areas of the service affected by this provision are the application’s search function, access to objectionable blogs, and the user’s personal control panel.

The most discussed aspect of these new rules is the way the application now limits what a query produces when a user searches for one of several “forbidden” tags.

Although Tumblr hasn’t officially listed which tags have been banned, Tumblr users are finding out. And the list of tags now banned from Tumblr’s iOS app includes “beard,” “girl,” “insomnia,” “mine,” “me,” “tagged,” and possibly the strangest of all, “Alec Lightwood.”

However, this is not exactly a blanket prohibition; While some search terms simply return fewer results than before, other stronger keywords and phrases may not provide you at all.

This right. For topics that are deemed highly offensive, you may come across the dreaded “This content has been hidden” message, preventing you from continuing.

Access blogs on Tumblr iOS

All personal App blogs have the option to be marked as existing for adults only. These blogs will no longer be accessible through the Tumblr app for iOS, but they are not the only ones.

The App announcement suggested that many blogs that are not marked this way will no longer be accessible through the iOS app “due to these changes.” They don’t design this review process; all we know is that the content will be hidden in the same way as described above.

Those who live on Tumblr’s “Stuff for You” page may be disappointed to see fewer content recommendations and blogs to follow as more and more offensive content is dropped. It is unclear if there will be a way for Tumblr users to do this restriction.
