GB Poll: PTI, Independents Bag More Seats, Crush Opposition
GB's former chief minister Mehdi Shah was defeated by PTI candidate while losing parties cry foul
WEB DESK: The preliminary election results of the Gilgit-Baltistan poll are pouring in with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and independent candidates remaining on the forefront with nine and seven seats respectively. The candidates tried luck on 23 of the total 24 seats of the Gilgit Pakistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) to be formed for the third time.
The elections were postponed in the constituency GBLA-3 as a major candidate died of novel coronavirus in early October.
As per unofficial results, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) won four and two seats respectively and decried alleged rigging and irregularities in the election.
PPP’s candidates won in constituencies GBLA-1 Gilgit and GBLA-2 Gilgit. Amjad Hussain managed to take 11,178 votes in GBLA -1 and Jamil Ahmed won GBLA -2 with 8,817 votes after defeating independent candidates. Independent and PTI candidates remained second in both constituencies respectively.
PPP’s Amjad Hussain took 4,716 votes to win GBLA-4 Nagar-I defeating Islami Tehreek Pakistan (ITP). Independent candidate Javed Ali Manwa bagged 2,570 votes in GBLA-5 Nagar-II followed by Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM).
Obaidullah Baig of PTI won with 5,622 votes in GBLA-6 Hunza after defeating independent candidate Noor Muhamad who took 4,584 votes.
Raja Zakaria Khan of PTI defeated former chief minister Syed Mehdi Shah of the PPP in GBLA-7 Skardu-I. According to unofficial results, the PTI candidate bagged 5,290 votes, followed by Syed Mehdi Shah with 4,114 votes.
Further, MMWM’s Muhammad Kazim won on GBLA-8 Skardu-II while independent candidate Wazir Muhammad Saleem claimed victory on GBLA-9 Skardu-III. Each bagged 7,534 and 6,865 votes respectively.
GBLA-10 Skardu-IV was won by independent candidate Nasir Ali while PTI remained victorious in GBLA-11 Kharmang and GBLA-12 Shagar.
PTI candidate Syed Amjad Ali got 5,872 votes to lead on GBLA-11 Kharmang while Raja Azam Khan of the same party took 9,322 votes in GB-12 Shagar.

The other two constituencies of GBLA -13 Astore-I and GBLA -14 Astore-II were both won by PTI where its candidates including Khalid Khursheed and Shamsul Haq bagged 4,836 and 5,354 votes respectively.
Independent Haji Shah Baig remained victorious in GBLA-16 Diamer-I while PML-N’s candidate Engineer Muhammad Noor won in GBLA-15 Diamer-II.
The constituency of GB-17 Diamer-III was won by PTI’s Haider Khan who defeated Jamiat-e-Ulema Fazal (JUI-F) candidate standing second.
Haji Gulbar Khan of PTI won in GBLA-18 Diamer-IV after taking 6,793 votes to defeat independent candidate Malik Kifayat ur Rehman who took 5,986 votes.
Wazeer Nawaz Khan Naji who fought independently bagged 6,208 votes in GBLA -19 Ghazar-I while PPP remained second.
Moreover, PTI claimed victory in GBLA -20, Ghazar II with its candidate Nazeer Ahmed taking 5,582 votes.
The constituency of GBLA -21 Ghazar-III was won by PML-N’s Ghulam Muhammad who bagged 4,334 votes against PPP’s candidate Ayub Shah.
Independent Mushtaq Hussain defeated PTI’s ticket holder, Ibrahim Sanai, on GBLA -22 Ghanche-I after taking 6,051 votes against 4,945.
GBLA -23 was also won by an independent candidate, Haji Abdul Hameed, who took 3,666 votes against PTI’s 3,296 votes.
PPP’s Muhammad Ismail bagged 6,206 votes in GB-24 Ghanche II and defeated PTI’s candidate Syed Shamsuddin who got 5,361 votes.
