ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Secretary-General Ahsan Iqbal has confirmed that the new government led by Shehbaz Sharif will hold an inquiry into the lettergate scandal.

While talking to Geo News, Ahsan Iqbal said that the new government will not only oversee the lettergate scandal but it will also hold an inquiry into it. He detailed that an inquiry will be held to ascertain the facts for scandalising a routine diplomatic cable and putting the country’s diplomacy and Pakistan-US bilateral ties at stake.

Iqbal affirmed the question regarding the constitution of an inquiry commission over the lettergate scandal. He added that it will be investigated why the diplomatic cable was used to get political benefits by Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The politician confirmed that Shehbaz Sharif will be elected as the prime minister on Monday (today) and said that the new government will try to take the opposition benches onboard on the national issues besides facing its criticism.

It is pertinent to mention here that the former federal cabinet of the then prime minister Imran Khan had decided to form an inquiry commission over the alleged US plot to topple the PTI government.

According to the announcement, Lieutenant General (retd) Tariq Khan had been nominated to lead the commission to probe the threat letter.

However, Tariq Khan had excused himself from heading the probe commission over the threat letter.

On the day of the no-trust voting, Imran Khan-led former federal cabinet had declassified the diplomatic cable and sent it to the top political heads including the Senate chairman and National Assembly (NA) speaker for reviewing its content.
