Armed men break into house of TV anchor Shiffa Yousafzai, torture servant

ISLAMABAD: Two unidentified armed men barged into the house of TV anchor and host Shiffa Yousafzai on Tuesday evening and allegedly tortured the servant to know about her and her family’s location after finding they were not at home.

In a video statement on Twitter, Hum News anchor Shiffa Yousafzai said that the armed men seemingly jumped the boundary wall to come inside when they were not at home. She said that a servant was subjected to torture by the armed men who kept asking him to tell her location, however, the servant told them that he did not know about their location.

Islamabad police said appropriate security arrangements were made for Yousafzai’s residence till further orders and promised speedy investigation. A case was also lodged at the Kohsar police station.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb strongly condemned the storming of house and torturing the servants of anchorperson Shiffa Yousafzai. Talking to her on telephone, the Information Minister said people involved in this incident will be brought to justice.

She in strong words condemned the incident saying that police is investigating the incident. The anchorperson Shiffa Yousafzai informed the Minister that she was not present at home when the incident took place.

Journalist fratenity expressed their outrage over the attack on Yousafzai’s house.

Moeed Pirzada tweeted, “A female journalist,TV Anchor, prominent critic of PMLN/PDM Govt living with her parents in centre of Islamabad not far from PM House being intimidated in this way means “Age of Fascism” – UN should stop lecturing Taliban and worry for criminal politics of Pakistan!”

Hamid Mir wrote on Twitter that the incident of armed men breaking into Yousafzai’s house is similar to another incidents that took place in the past in which gunmen barged int houses of many journalists. The gunmen tortured and threatened the journalists and fled from the house. He demanded the federal government to not only condemn but arrest the responsible persons.

Fawad Chaudhry said, “Why #ReportersBeyondBorders and international Journalists community is so silent on attacks on Journalists in Pakistan? I call upon International Organisations to immediately initiate Investigation into Killings, torture and harassment incidents of Journalists in Pakistan.”

Ali Haider Zaidi said, “This is now very disturbing! @Shiffa_ZY just called to inform me that two armed men just broke in her house, beat up her servants, asked about the family, searched the house and left! This is a very alarming situation.”
