Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ushers Sikh Pilgrims

WEB DESK: Sikh pilgrims from India have arrived in Pakistan to attend 551st birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism and the first of 10 Sikh Gurus.

The main ceremony will be held on November 30 at Gurdwara Janamasthan Nankana Sahib in Punjab province.

The shrine is a highly revered Gurdwara that was built at Nankana Sahib.

Nankana Sahib is a city near Lahore in the province of Punjab, believed to be the place where Guru Nanak was born.

Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Additional Secretary (Shrines) Tariq Wazir, Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandak Committee (PSGPC) President Satwant Singh and General Secretary Ameer Singh, and former PSGPC President Bishan Singh welcomed the Sikh pilgrims on Pakistan’s side of the Wagah Border.

Two members of the Indian High Commission, R B Sohran and Santosh Kumar, arrived here from Islamabad to greet the pilgrims at Wagah.

The Sikh pilgrims will visit other gurdwaras as well in the province during their 10-day stay.

To promote religious harmony, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released a song on Friday.

The song has been pictured in the context of the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor for giving visa-free access to the Sikh community from India.

In the song, Bollywood celebrity Ponam Kaur and her family are seen expressing their gratitude to Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Every year, more than 2,000 Sikhs come to Pakistan to take part in the birth anniversary celebrations.

Under the religious tourism agreement between India and Pakistan, as many as 3,000 Sikh pilgrims from India can visit Gurdwara Nankana Sahib every year on the religious occasion.

The number seemed to decrease this year due to the pandemic situation. Only 600 Sikh pilgrims crossed the Pak-India border this year.
