Bitter Day: PTI Faced Rejection From Three Legal Forums

A politically bitter day for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as it faced rejection from three legal forums on March 10.

The ruling PTI had approached Supreme Court (SC), Islamabad High Court (IHC), and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for cancellation of victory notification of Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM’s) joint candidate Yusuf Raza Gillani and suspension of by-election in NA-75 Daska.

In the first case, SC turned down the plea of PTI’s candidate from NA-75, Ali Asjad Malhi, to suspend ECP’s orders to conduct by-poll in the whole constituency.

The electoral body had nullified results of by-poll in Daska held on February 19 on charges of rigging.

The by-election in the constituency is now rescheduled for April 10 at the request of the Punjab government which sought time to fill vacant positions in the administrative machinery.

In another instance, IHC declined PTI MNA Ali Nawaz Awan’s petition to stop Yusuf Raza Gillani’s victory notification in the Senate election on Islamabad seat on the basis of the video scandal involving Gillani’s son.

The high court maintained that ECP was the related forum to look into the matter.

In another development on March 10, ECP discarded the ruling party’s application to cancel notification of PDM’s joint candidate victory.

The commission in its verdict rejected PTI’s petition to withheld notification of Gillani’s victory.

The decision paved way for Gillani to contest the election of Senate chairman.

Thus, the ruling PTI faced rejection from three legal forums on the same day that may have repercussions for the party in the future.
