Covid is Visibly an Alibi to Keep Maryam Away From NA-249

The pretext under which the provincial government wants to delay by-poll seems injudicious by the political observers

Sindh government moves to prevent the entry of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz as it requested the electoral body to postpone by-poll in NA-249 constituency in Karachi.

With the latest move, sources said the rescheduling plea was merely to put Maryam Nawaz at bay from the constituency and stop her from electioneering.

PML-N leader is expected to arrive in the port city on April 24 to campaign for her party that had lost the election in NA-249 in general elections 2018 with a narrow margin.

The pretext under which the provincial government seeks delay of by-poll seems injudicious by the political observers.

On April 19 or during the past 24 hours, as many as 3,228 people returned positive for coronavirus with 104 fatalities.

Comparatively, some 737 infected patients were reported from Sindh while only three patients succumbed to the deadly virus in the province.

Meanwhile, despite the alarming pandemic situation in the province, the Election COmmission of Pakistan held by-poll in NA-75 Daska by-election was also held on April 11.

Therefore, the Sindh government’s demand merely seems an alibi which is irrational and more of something to prevent Maryam from landing in Karachi.

The letter

In a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Sindh government sought a delay in the by-poll as it cited the worsening coronavirus crisis in the province.

The letter stated that the infection rate in Karachi and Hyderabad soared past 7% during the past week.

“Over 400 Covid-19 patients were undergoing treatment in intensive care units and UHDs of various hospitals in Karachi”, it read.

The constituency

The seat fell vacant after PTI’s Faisal Vawda resigned from the national assembly after winning the Senate election.

Vawda had defeated PML-N’s President Shahbaz Sharif after a crunch contest in general elections 2018.
