Criteria For Appointing Shaukat Tareen as Finance Minister?

Another finance minister of PPP-tenure, Shaukat Tareen, has been given the task to manage the country’s exchequer but his appointment is against the rules Imran Khan plays by and raised questions on the criteria set for making into the federal cabinet.

Shaukat Tareen has been appointed as the fourth finance minister during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) tenure after it came into power in 2018 and it has raised numerous questions on the criteria chosen by Prime Minister Imran Khan to fill his cabinet.

Questions have emerged about what standards were taken into account by the premier to assign Shaukat Tareen the major responsibility of fixing Pakistan’s economy.

He was a co-suspect in Rental Power Projects (RPPs) corruption case along with former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed references against both officials.

An accountability court had acquitted the finance minister. But, the anti-graft watchdog has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against Tareen’s acquittal which is yet to be heard.

Portfolio as a banker

His portfolio as an economic expert doesn’t bode well for the future of the national economy if his own business is taken into consideration.

Tareen is the owner of Silkbank which has a poor share value of around just Rs 1.27 in the Pakistan Stock Market (PSX).

In 2010, he had stepped down as the finance minister after a scandal pertaining to raising liquidity for Silkbank came to the fore.
