NAB Ordinance Crux is in a Provision Surrounding Javed Iqbal
There is a deadlock between the government and opposition on the matter of appointment of the new chairman for the National Accountability Bureau
The crux of the fresh NAB ordinance has carved the way for incumbent chairman Justice (R) Javed Iqbal to continue leading the bureau.
There is a deadlock between the government and opposition on the matter of appointment of the new chairman for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The 20-page NAB ordinance was promulgated by President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday but the crux of the whole document lies in a new provision which appears to be specially put in there for Javed Iqbal.

The incumbent chairman can be reappointed to the post which the premier wants.
Justice (R) Javed Iqbal will remain on the seat even beyond the completion of his term on October 8 until a new appointment.
Now after the amendments in the ordinance, the president of the country will consult with the prime minister and opposition leader in the national assembly unlike in the past when both leaders of the houses had to mull over the names for the key post.
“There shall be a Chairman, National Accountability Bureau to be appointed by the President in consultation with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly”, an amended provision read.
If the consensus is not developed, the proposed names will be referred to a parliamentary committee comprising 12 members of which one-third will be from the senate.
Notably, Prime Minister Imran Khan had rejected consulting the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif which was previously required by the NAB law.
