The revered and iconic Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani, who passed away under Indian detention in late hours of Monday, was snubbed by the leading newspaper Dawn.

The country’s widely circulated English daily, Dawn, shut its eyes to the leader who dedicated his life for the freedom fight of Kashmiris and published a single column news on his demise.

With all leading dailies giving huge space and attention to the demise of a Muslim hero Dawn, ignored its journalistic responsibilities and brushed aside the importance of the occasion.

A huge chunk of the society including journalists condemned the deliberate ignorance of the newspaper and blamed it of having anti-state interests.

Not only this, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry also lambasted Dawn during an interview that the newspaper is actively involved in conspiracies against Pakistan.

Ali Gilani was an MLA from the Sopore constituency of Jammu and Kashmir in 1972, 1977, and 1987 and also served as the chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC).

The veteran leader remained associated with Jamaat-i-Islami in Indian Kashmir and later founded his party, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

The iconic leader was conferred with Pakistan’s highest civilian honor, Nishan-e-Pakistan, in 2020 and he was also an author of 11 books.
