Digital Media to Gulp Major Chunk of Ads in 5Yrs: Fawad
The former information minister said that the first-ever digital policy of Pakistan was ready and just pending approval
Federal Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry has warned that electronic media would face a massive disruption in the upcoming years as the share of ads on digital platforms will grow bigger.
While addressing a Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) seminar on “Freedom of Press and Resolution of Media Crisis” on Wednesday, the former information minister said that the first-ever digital policy of Pakistan was ready and just pending approval.
Under the policy, Fawad said that a large chunk of ads would go to digital platforms from electronic and print media.
He added the speed of media has increased rapidly due to technology and it has become a challenge for governments and politicians around the world to manage information war.
“ This is not just our problem but of the whole world”, the ex-information minister said.
“When I was the information minister 2-3 years back, I had warned the people associated with the media industry that in five years, we would not find formal television the same as today due to technology disruption”.
“ I had talked about five years… But frankly, you can see where YouTube channels have gone in a couple of years”, Fawad contended.
“It was the tussle between US and China that delayed the launch of 5G by Huawei and once it happens, the digital media platforms would see an unprecedented boom”, Fawad Chaudhry asserted.
The former information minister said that the media houses should be adaptive to new technologies as he claimed that 5G disruption would be bigger than the internet itself.
He told that the government was bringing the first-ever digital policy under which a budget would be earmarked for running advertisements on digital platforms.
The ex-information minister asserted that advertisement on digital media would grow bigger than formal TV in the next five years.

Once promulgated, the news websites and individuals running channels on Youtube and other social media platforms will register with Information Ministry for becoming eligible to procure ads.
