Disqualification of Nawaz Sharif and Jahangir Tareen about to an end

Government unanimously approved law to allow maximum penalty of five years of disqualification from National Assembly

In presence of 8 members of opposition, Shehbaz Sharif government approved discrimination law from National Assembly. Mojan-e-Mojan, the passage of the law paved the way for eligibility for Nawaz Sharif Jahangir Tareen and others.

In the midst of approving the federal budget 2023-24, the government unanimously passed the law to give the date of the election to the Election Commission, while the maximum penalty for disqualification is five years from the National Assembly.

Passage of law has paved the way for eligibility for Nawaz Sharif and Jahangir Tareen among others. The government submitted the Election Amendment Bill to the National Assembly for approval.

In the bill, an amendment to the Election Act has been proposed under Article 62F of the Constitution. The Election Reforms Bill 2017 has been amended.

After the new amendment in the Election Act, the disqualification penalty under Article 62 1F of the Constitution will now be five years. Under the Election Act 2023, the amendment to give the Election Commission the power to announce the date of general elections without consulting the President has been approved.

The government will not face any difficulty in making the Election Act Amendment Bill an Act of Parliament and since there is a clear possibility of the Bill being passed in the absence of President Arif Alvi.

In the absence of the President, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani took charge as the Acting President. The Acting President is expected to sign the Election Act Bill soon.

After the Acting President’s signature, the Bill will become an Act of Parliament. President Arif Alvi is currently in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj.

Analysts say that the approval of this law was taken by the government when neither Leader of Opposition Raja Riaz Sahib nor Chairman of Public Accounts Committee Noor Alam Khan was present in the National Assembly. In such a case, what will be the legal status of this bill, the judiciary has to see?

Analysts further say that the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif and Jahangir Tareen, head of the Stabilization Pakistan Party, is about to end. But the question is, when will the entry into practical politics take place? Because Nawaz Sharif is still out of the country.
