ECP apologises to JI after making false accusation

ECP has apologised to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for falsely accusing the political party of requesting to postpone Sindh LG polls.

KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has apologised to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for falsely accusing the political party of requesting to postpone Sindh Local Government (LG) polls.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had given a statement that Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) sought postponement of the LG polls scheduled on July 24 via a letter.

The ECP spokesperson claimed that JI made an unethical move by holding a sit-in outside its Karachi office after the commission announced the postponement of the Sindh LG polls second phase due to the predictions of heavy rains and urban flooding.

Following ECP’s statement in July, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi sent a legal notice to the commission through its Public Aid Committee led by Saifuddin Advocate and said that the letter was written to defer NA-245 by-polls but not Sindh LG polls.

The political party announced to file Rs500 million defamation suit if ECP fails to tender an apology for making a false accusation.

The commission later found itself wrong and tendered an apology to JI.

Earlier, the ECP announced the postponement of the second phase of the Sindh LG polls and fixed the organisation of the elections on August 28 which was previously scheduled on July 24.

Several major political parties, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have sought the postponement of the Sindh LG polls, primarily on the basis of flawed voter lists and controversial delimitation despite the forthcoming elections are going to be held on the basis of old delimitation.
