‘Ex-husband’ nabbed in Pakistani-American Wajiha Swati abduction case
Police officials have arrested the prime suspect in abduction case of a Pakistani-American citizen Wajiha Swati
RAWALPINDI: Police officials have arrested the prime suspect in the Wajiha Swati abduction case, a Pakistani-American citizen who had gone missing from Rawalpindi.
The police made progress on the alleged abduction case of Pakistani-American Wajiha Swati after the Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench ordered to recover her.
Missing Wajiha Swati’s ex-husband, Rizwan Habib, was arrested by Rawalpindi police and produced before a local court on December 22 where he was handed over to the police on a four-day physical remand.
It was learnt that Wajiha Swati had landed in Pakistan from England on October 16 to resolve property issues with her ex-husband. She was scheduled to return to England on October 22, however, she went missing since then.
Swati’s son Abdullah Mehdi had moved to the LHC Rawalpindi bench to recover his mother after the registration of a case at the Morgah police station in Rawalpindi, nominating Rizwan Habib.
The American intelligence agency, Federal Board of Investigation (FBI), had also initiated an inquiry after the reported abduction of a US citizen from Rawalpindi. It emerged that police authorities were providing technical assistance to the FBI in the case.
Aspects of Wajiha Swati’s case have similarities with the Noor Mukadam murder case who was brutally killed in Islamabad on July 21. In the Noor Mukadam case, the murderer was an American citizen who allegedly raped and murdered her after calling her at his residence.
Wajiha Swati had been called to visit Pakistan by her ex-husband, Rizwan Habib, and then allegedly abducted her. Swati’s son expressed suspicions in the First Information Report (FIR) that his mother could be assaulted mentally, physically and sexually by Rizwan Habib.
