Can Fissures at Top Level Cost PML-N Next Elections?

Maryam Nawaz said she was not part of that PML-N that voted in the favor of the law that extended the term of the incumbent army chief but Hamza Shehbaz said it was a unanimous decision

The fissures in the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) existing at the top level can mar the party in the next elections.

In the latest development, a division was witnessed in the party over the matter of extension to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Bajwa.

PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz said she was not part of that PML-N that voted in the favor of the law that extended the term of the incumbent army chief.

However, this was countered by PML-N senior leader and Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Hamza Shehbaz, during his press talk in Lahore on Sunday.

He defended the extension decision and maintained that it was taken by the party leadership, adding that the national interest should remain above the personal interest.

The reason Maryam Nawaz took a different path on the matter is that she and her father Nawaz Sharif have been critical of the army since the latter was ousted as the prime minister.

The fissures in PML-N at the top level have also worried prominent leaders in the party who see it as a slow poison that could inflict considerable damage in the next general elections in 2023.

While addressing the PML-N workers convention in Rawalpindi on Sunday, ex-defence minister Khawaja Asif called for the party workers to maintain unity in their ranks.

He called for the party workers, from Peshawar to Karachi, to stand behind the PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif.
