Geo News publishes false story regarding ‘power plant of Maryam Nawaz’s son-in-law’

Geo News published a false story regarding the power plant of Maryam Nawaz's son-in-law as the trade ban was imposed in 2019 but not 2020.

Geo News has published a false story regarding the power plant of Maryam Nawaz’s son-in-law as it claimed that 60 per cent of the construction work of the power plant was completed before 2020 prior to the imposition of a ban on all kinds of imports from India in 2020.

The Geo News report claimed that the power plant’s construction work up to 60 per cent was completed before 2020 and the then government asked the concerned firm to find alternative sources to complete its construction which led Maryam Nawaz’s son-in-law to contact China for the imports of remaining 40 per cent machinery.

However, the reality was something else as it was reported wrong by Geo News. Pakistan formally suspended its trade relations with India in August 2019, imposing a blanket ban on all genres of trade and imports in response to India’s decision to revoke Article 370 of its constitution that granted occupied Kashmir a special status.

The federal cabinet headed by former prime minister Imran Khan had endorsed the decisions taken by the National Security Committee (NSC) and the joint session of parliament, which include the suspension of trade ties with India.

The report was published by Geo News after the emergence of an alleged audio tape of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in which a man was telling Shehbaz Sharif that Maryam Nawaz is asking to import a power plant from India for her son-in-law.

To this, Shehbaz Sharif allegedly replied that he is their son-in-law and the person on the telephone call should tell him about the issues. He allegedly said that half of the power plant’s machinery was imported from India but any progress would create difficulties for them. Sharif told him to convince him [Maryam Nawaz’s son-in-law] as he will also try to apprise him regarding the problem after returning from Turkey.

The man on the telephone call asked Shehbaz Sharif to give this task to Ishaq Dar to which Sharif accepted the suggestion.
