Gharidah Farooqi pemra derogatory debate Murad Saeed

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a show-cause notice to TV show host Gharidah Farooqi for using derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Imran Khan and Federal Minister Murad Saeed.

Gharidah Farooqi faced the music after airing a vague debate in derogation of PM Imran Khan and Federal Minister Murad Saeed during her political analysis programme on NewsOne TV.

PEMRA issued a show-cause notice to NewsOne TV to clarify its position over the derogatory debate in ‘G For Gharidah’ hosted by Gharidah Farooqi on February 10.

Moreover, it was also learnt that the transmission of NewsOne TV was choked by cable operators in different cities of the country.

Senior journalists have criticised the derogatory debate aired on Gharidah Farooqi TV show in which the host and panelists including political analysts were using objectionable remarks against Murad Saeed. The senior journalists have called it against the principles of journalism.

The anchorperson faced a backlash on Twitter after her TV show as many social media trends surfaced against her including #GForGhatya, #GForGhaleeza and PEMRA. She was also being trolled on social media following her objectionable debate against the political leaders.

During the programme, Farooqi raised a question regarding the ranking of top-performing ministries in which Murad Saeed secured the first position and wondered to know the reasons behind it.

Mohsin Baig gave a twisted response to her query, saying that he doesn’t know the reason but there is something mentioned in Reham Khan’s book.

NewsOne Director Tariq Mehmood, who also appeared in Gharidah Farooqi’s programme, claimed that cable operators had been given instructions to block transmission of NewsOne across the country.

Seniors journalists have criticised the way of talking aired in the TV programme. Mubashir Zaidi said on Twitter, “This kind of loose talk can never be classified as journalism.”

Mazhar Abbas commented, “It is high time to revisit the fall of journalism in Pakistan.”

Tanzeela Mazhar wrote on Twitter, “Panelists make such loose comments sometimes. Anchors can ask them to behave or at least can avoid sharing those comments on social media. Journalism is far more serious business.”

Iqrarul Hassan said that the vague debate against Murad Saeed was condemnable. He added that everyone is allowed to criticise a minister and the concerned ministry instead of personal enmity. He said that Murad Saeed’s ministry has obviously performed well as compared to the previous governments which should be praised.

After the video clip of Gharidah Farooqi show went viral, the official Twitter handle of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also shared a condemnation post using #GForGhatya hastag.

Critics took on the anchorperson and intensified criticism against her for the past cases.

A user posted an alleged audiotape of Farooqi in which she was misbehaving with her housemaid.
