Government & Opposition Want to Uproot Existing System

The developments on political canvas of the country suggest that government and opposition parties are fed up with the existing system and want to uproot it to bring a new one, of their choice.

Pakistan’s political outlook took an interesting turn when ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) entreated the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to step down.

On March 15, the Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood addressed a presser with Information Minister Shibli Faraz and Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain.

The government officials claimed that no political party was satisfied with the electoral body and that it should leave voluntarily.

Shafqat Mehmood said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr Siknadar Sultan Raja and members should resign from their positions as they failed to stop unscrupulous practices in the elections.

A new election commission should be formed which is acceptable to both government and opposition, the ministers suggested.

Interestingly, the presser has come at a moment when ECP is close to conclude foreign funding case against ruling PTI which is under adjudication since 2014.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has reached a crossover as it would decide on en masse resignations from the assembly today ahead of its long march scheduled on March 26.

The opposition alliance wants dissolution of parliament as it believes that PTI government was ‘escorted’ to power.

Besides ousting the government, PDM also wants abolition of the accountability watchdog, National Accountability Bureau (NAB), citing that the state is using it to crush the opposition.

The current political scenario suggests that neither government nor opposition is happy and satisfied with the existing system and wants to uproot it to replace it with a new one, of their choice.

The analysts believe that political parties level charges against state institutions when they are intimidated by them on their wrongdoings.
