The government of Pakistan has made significant progress in two projects that are going to make lives easier.

The government is launching 5G technology in December next year while it will soon launch a unified emergency helpline named PEHEL-911.

Federal IT Minister Syed Aminul Haq inaugurated the Software Technology Park (STP) at Hazara University in Mansehra.

The technology park sprawls on 12,000 square-foot (sq-ft) while the ministry will also set up National Incubation Center (NIC) at Hazara University soon.

While addressing the ceremony, he said that 5G technology will be introduced in the country by December 2022. He said the preparations in this regard are underway.

Apart from this, the minister said the government will soon complete projects worth Rs 31 billion for improving internet connectivity and speed.

Aminul Haq said that the government will soon launch the ‘Smartphones For All’ project, adding that freelancers and startups are bringing prestige to the country.

Unified emergency helpline

The government will also launch a unified 911 emergency helpline, to be named PEHEL, across the country on the western model.

Under the service, access to emergency or rescue services including ambulance, police, fire brigade, gas, electricity, and others will be possible by just dialing 911.

Growing internet users

IT minister said according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the number of internet broadband users in the country is increasing by 1.4 million every month.

As many as 88 million internet users are currently availing broadband internet facility in Pakistan, he added.

Aminul Haq said that the number of mobile phone users rose by 81% and internet users by 41% during the past two years.

Apart from this, the government has announced to start new broadband and network expansion projects every month under Universal Service Fund (USF).
