Hamid Mir reveals army chief was warned about Imran Khan in 2018

The army chief invited me for a meeting before the 2018 election, a person there was repeatedly warning General Bajwa about consequences of making Imran Khan the prime minister, claimed by senior anchorperson.

Senior journalist and anchorperson Hamid Mir has made a big disclosure about the warning given to Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in 2018 regarding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan.

Hamid Mir appeared on Shehzad Iqbal’s Naya Pakistan programme on Geo News yesterday and discussed in detail the PTI long march and the current political crisis.

During the program, Mir brought up details of an incident in 2018 while talking about Imran Khan launching criticism against the military leadership at the start of his long march.

He said, Before the 2018 election, when it was clear that the establishment of Pakistan wanted to make Imran Khan the prime minister, I did an interview with Imran Khan in which he criticised Nawaz Sharif that the PML-N chief was brought by General Jilani and it was a product of the army.”

He further said, “On the night of this interview, Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa called me to the Army House for a meeting. In this meeting, a gentleman was also sitting who was repeatedly warning General Bajwa about the severe consequences of making Imran Khan the prime minister.

Hamid Mir said that “He had said many other things and many people other than him told General Bajwa about the same opinions. Today, if Imran Khan is criticizing him by naming DG ISI, then it is not new for me as it was already predicted.”

Hamid Mir also severely criticized the military leadership in the program. He said that “our establishment should also learn from this situation that General Ayub Khan made Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto his foreign minister and then he had a fight with Bhutto.”

“Later, Bhutto created the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) during his (Ayub Khan) tenure and then they had a fight and the army imposed martial law and executed Bhutto in 1977.”

Mir continued, “Then General Zia-ul-Haq brought Nawaz Sharif into politics, but he too could not go with the army and then he had to be exiled not once but twice. Now Imran Khan has come, don’t you ever think about yourself that whenever you interfere in politics and the man you bring first you say that he is the patriot and the solution to the problems of Pakistan and the real messiah but later you start fighting with him”.

The journalist added, “It is good that you don’t want to join politics, but you should also look at yourself, why did ISI help Imran Khan in 2011 and why did they bring people from other parties to Khan’s political party? In a press conference, you should also tell about your role in nurturing Imran Khan in the past.”
