Imran Khan raises over Rs5b donations via int’l telethon for flood victims

On the other hand, Rs2.3 million was collected in the flood relief fund of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif established four days ago which showed public trust in Imran Khan's initiative.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former prime minister Imran Khan collected more than Rs5 donations for flood victims during a live international telethon that lasted for three hours on Monday night.

Sources told News360 that on the other hand, Rs2.3 million was collected in the flood relief fund of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif established four days ago which showed public trust in Imran Khan’s initiative.

PTI senior leader Fawad Chaudhry announced in a late Monday night message on Twitter that a total amount of over Rs5 billion was collected in the telethon.

Khan had announced two days ago that he would raise funds for the flood victims through an international telethon. He said that heavy rains and floods have wreaked havoc across the country, leaving millions of people homeless and requiring money for rehabilitation.

Before the telethon, PTI chief Imran Khan appealed to the Pakistanis including overseas nationals to actively participate in the fundraising event and donate whatever they can.

He said in his address that floods have caused the human tragedy in Pakistan after record rains and it is a testing time for all Pakistanis.

In his address, Imran Khan said that the collected donations will be managed by Sania Nishtar and the money will be distributed equally to all the flood-affected areas of Pakistan.

It should be noted that the Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court Justice Athar Minallah suspended PEMRA’s ban on live broadcasting of Imran Khan’s speeches yesterday.

The court had ordered PEMRA that the ban on Imran Khan’s live broadcast was unacceptable and therefore the ban should be lifted immediately.

The development came after PTI approached the court for live telecast of Imran Khan’s international telethon for flood victims.

It should be noted that last week Imran Khan visited the flood-affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and also interacted with the flood victims in the relief camps.

On the other hand, the Pakistani government appealed for donations from the international community and Pakistani philanthropists to overcome the large-scale disaster caused by the floods in the country. A flood relief fund has been set up at the government level to receive donations.

A flood relief fund has been established at the government level to receive the money and a bank account has also been shared. Sources said Rs2.3 million was collected in the flood relief fund established by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif four days ago.
