Is PPP’s Offer to PDM The Most Viable Option?

PPP Buttoned Lips PDM

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has once offered its ex-partner in Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) an in-house change in the Punjab assembly which the political analysts believe to be the most viable option.

During Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath show, PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira floated the offer to Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah.

However, PML-N didn’t seem much convinced like the rest of its partners in PDM.

The opposition coalition met in Islamabad on Wednesday which was the first time since May.

The meeting was convened by PDM Chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman and was joined by the leadership of all parties.

In a press briefing following it, the PDM chief criticized unannounced censorship of media and electoral reforms by the government.

He also turned down the results of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections won by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as well as of general polls of 2018.

Fazal-ur-Rehman said that they would not accept unilateral electoral reforms by the PTI government and termed electronic voting machine (EVM) as the easiest method of rigging.

The chief accused PTI of coming into power through election theft.

He also announced that PDM will stage a public rally in Karachi on August 29.

The alliance’s rhetoric hasn’t changed since it was formed in September last year.

The periodic shows of street power haven’t reaped any results for the opposition coalition.

In the meantime, PTI won the elections in Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and AJK while Prime Minister Imran Khan also won the vote of confidence from the lower house of the assembly in March after losing the key seat of Islamabad in the Senate election.

PPP, one of the major components in the alliance, parted ways after it and emphasized an in-house change to topple the incumbent government in Punjab and center.

However, the integrants of the coalition took strong exception against it.

Now, PPP has once again offered PML-N for a joint venture in Punjab for in-house change to oust the PTI government.

The political analysts say that the course of action put forward by PPP seems to be the most viable option as the display of street power would not make any difference to the incumbent government.
