IHC Rejected PML-N Plea on Oath Time of Lawmakers
The largest opposition party filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court challenging the presidential ordinance
Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed the petition filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) against the presidential ordinance binding elected members to take oath timely.
In the petition, the party had challenged the presidential ordinance that demanded elected members should take oath within 60 days of commencement of the first sitting of their respective legislature.
The hearing was conducted by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah.
The petition stated that PML-N is the largest opposition party in both houses of the parliament namely the National Assembly (NA) and Senate with 82 MNAs and 16 senators respectively.

It added the opposition party was aggrieved by the mala fide and person-specific legislation promulgated by the ministry of law and justice to target the PML-N.
PML-N’s lawyer said that as per the ordinance the seat will become vacant if the oath isn’t taken within 60 days.
After the conclusion of arguments, IHC has dismissed the petition filed by PML-N against the presidential ordinance regarding the timing of oath-taking, saying that it isn’t needed at the moment when general elections are scheduled in 2023.
The court said that its interference in the matter is against the public interest, adding that the incorporation of the judiciary in political matters is not a healthy practice.
