Journalists’ harassment case: AGP apprises SC regarding malign campaign against Bushra Bibi
AGP apprises SC regarding a malign campaign against PM Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi by a group of journalists.
ISLAMABAD: Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Khalid Jawed Khan has apprised the Supreme Court (SC) regarding a malign campaign against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi by a group of journalists.
Attorney General Khalid Jawed Khan raised the issue of a malign campaign against PM’s wife Bushra Bibi during the hearing of a suo motu case over journalists harassment in Pakistan.
During the hearing on Thursday, Khan gave a reference to a news story that stated the appointment of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s (AJK) prime minister through ‘jinns’, aiming to indirectly target the premier’s wife.
He told the top court that insulting remarks were being delivered against a woman whose life is not public. He added that there were no objections to criticism against those holding public offices.
Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmed remarked that the court will not become a party in a matter of hurling abuses. Justice Ahmed added that it was immoral to launch such kind of criticism, however, it was not a reprehensible crime. He remarked that it is unfortunate that there are no appropriate defamation laws.
Justice Ahmed further observed that the narrator will face maximum damage for giving a false story in the shape of compromising the reputation. He added that journalists were also facing violence from the non-state actors and everyone wanted to read articles of their own choice in the evening.
Justice Ahmed remarked that restrictions and limitations must be enforced on all instead of just targeting the journalists.
During the hearing, the top court also grilled Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Inspector General (IG) Islamabad regarding the case related to the journalists and the gun attack on Absar Alam.
The top court ordered all advocate journalists to submit their written objects in the journalists’ harassment case. Justice Ahmed also directed IG Islamabad to submit a progress report on attack cases on journalists. The hearing was adjourned for an indefinite period.
A court reporter Siddique Jan said in a video that some journalists were running a malign campaign against PM Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi in the name of freedom of speech. He was of the view that the top court should take notice of the immoral personal attack against the premier’s wife.
