Karachi crime rate motorcycle thefts snatching cplc

KARACHI: The Sindh capital Karachi has recorded a sharp rise in daily crime rate in 2021 as the statistics showed an average of 125 motorcycles’ theft and 11 snatching incidents in a day.

The crime statistics were provided by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), indicating a sharp increase in the daily street crime rate in light of the reported incidents of snatching, dacoities, thefts and others.

These statistics are compiled on the basis of reported cases by the institutions like CPLC and Numbeo’s International Crime Index city-wise, excluding the incidents that are not reported by the Karachi citizens.

According to the Numbeo’s Crime Index by City 2021 Mid-Year, Karachi was ranked 114th spot in the list among 427 cities around the world after once grabbing the 6th spot in 2014 which gradually declines due to a decrease in criminal incidents.

The CPLC statistics showed that over 43,000 motorcycles were stolen from either parking lots or from outside residence, whereas, an average of 4,000 motorbikes were stolen every month, excluding the snatched two-wheelers this year with an average recovery rate of 2,500 bikes that had been handed over to the owners with most of the bikes, not in working condition.

Over 4,200 two-wheelers were snatched at gunpoint in different incidents, whereas, over 300 such cases were reported on a monthly basis on an average.

Over 1,700 cars were stolen from parking lots and outside residences, whereas, an average of more than 150 cars were stolen every month as compared to 4,000 motorcycles.

However, the car snatching ratio was less in the statistics as over 200 cars were taken away from the owners in the whole year, making an average of below 20 cars a month. The recovery rate of cars was also good which is about 500 this year.

Over 2,300 mobiles were snatched, mostly from motorcycle riders in 2021 and CPLC recovered 50 per cent of the snatched mobile phones besides handing them over to the owners.

In its report to the Sindh Assembly, the law department stated that over 50 per cent of suspected criminals arrested by Karachi police during 2017 and 2018 managed to escape convictions and get acquitted by the concerned courts.
