Karachi Traffic Cops To Pedal Around on Bicycles
All squad members went through an assessment of cycling skills before assignment of duties
To swiftly resolve traffic problems, Karachi Traffic Police (KTP) personnel would now patrol on the roads on bicycles to spot the causes of traffic jams besides violations of rules.
KTP Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Iqbal Dara had launched the initiative of bicycle squad in the metropolis on April 30.
Initially, the cyclists were deployed on Abdullah Haroon Road and around Zainab Market, one of the bustling spots in the Saddar area of Karachi.

The pilot project turned out to be fruitful and the traffic police have now decided to extend the program.
The officials said that the bicyclists would be spread all over the city particularly in areas that experience traffic logs during rush hours.
Currently, the bicycle squad would propel on main thoroughfares in the city including Zaib-un-Nisa Street, Empress Market, Saddar Mobile Market, Tariq Road, Hyderi Market and MA Jinnah Road.
Its main task would be to maintain smooth traffic flow and trace causes of traffic jams to unclog them. They have also been tasked to report traffic breaches of rules.
All squad members have been equipped with walkie-talkie sets to inform the officials about wrongly-parked vehicles and other major violations.
The traffic police officials asserted that the deployment of the bicycle squad had brought down complaints of traffic jams in the related areas.
They said that each bicycle cost around Rs 25,000 and all squad members went through an assessment of cycling skills before assignment of duties.
The officials said that the initiative is proving to be successful in mitigating traffic problems on different busy thoroughfares in Karachi.
