Karachi Traffic Management System Still in Doldrums

Project worth Rs 100 million was launched after a plethora of complaints regarding the ill-behavior of traffic wardens

In a bid to avert action and pursue corrupt practices, Karachi Intelligent Traffic Management System (KTMS) has been in the doldrums for the past three years due to alleged opposition from the top officials of Karachi Traffic Police.

The project worth Rs 100 million was launched after a plethora of complaints regarding the ill-behavior of traffic wardens and receiving backhanders to overlook violations came to the fore.

However, the high-ups of the traffic police declared it non-implementable and the project was put on the backburner.

Under the project, the Karachi Traffic Police were to procure vehicle-mounted cameras, portable speed breakers, portable traffic light signals, drone and body cameras, 1,350 walkie-talkies, 100 megaphones, sparking lights, and portable hydraulic machines.

However, only one feature of the project, e-challan, has been implemented in three years.

The drone cameras were to be used to find out the cause of traffic snarl-ups while the body-cams were to record the activities of the traffic officials and how they interact with the motorists.

Besides this, the government had planned to launch an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) and installation of 2,000 cameras across the roads and thoroughfares of the metropolis.

However, it was put deliberately put on the backburner and the project did not progress after the introduction of e-challan.

Allegedly, Karachi Intelligent Traffic Management System (KTMS) has remained in the doldrums as the officials want to continue corrupt practices instead of modernizing the force.

Meanwhile, the South African cricket team is currently staying in Karachi to play a test match, the road-users in Karachi will be experiencing snarl-ups today once again as all main thoroughfares would be blocked due to security reasons.
