Lawmakers, Students Defy Hazara University Dress Code

The move is being lauded by the government officials while the lawmakers from opposition and students criticized it

In a controversial move, Hazara University located in Mansehra in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) issued a dress code for the students, faculty, and management and drew opposition from the lawmakers.

The female students and staffers have been asked to wear an abaya, scarf, and shalwar kameez instead of skinny jeans, tights, and t-shirts.

Excessive makeup, jewels, and large handbags have also been prohibited.

The males have been directed not to wear skin-tight jeans, shorts, chains, and slippers and keep hair short with no ponytails.

Reaction

The move is being lauded by the government officials while the lawmakers from opposition and students criticized it.

The former declared the move towards uniformity to end the social divide while the latter believe that it was irrelevant to bound students and management to wear certain attire.

The management of the Hazara University said that more than 10,000 students were currently enrolled in the varsity.

The officials said that over half of the enrolled students belonged to humble backgrounds and could not afford to wear new dresses frequently.

Therefore, they contended that the move would bring uniformity among students belonging to different social classes and shun inferiority complex.

Hazara University spokesperson said that the dress code restriction would establish discipline in the educational institution.

The measure has received appreciation on part of the government but the students and opposition members looked disconsolate.
