Local NGO Launches ‘Cash The Trash’ in Karachi

The head of the NGO behind the initiative told that a representative of the NGO will visit the house one day a week to pick up trash

The people of Karachi will get the opportunity to earn cash against trash as a non-governmental organization (NGO) has launched a unique scheme in the metropolis.

The Head of ‘Cash The Trash’, Afsheen Sohail, said that the locals of Karachi could now redeem cash against solid waste.

While talking to the media at his office, she offered the people to collect garbage instead of dumping it openly and earn money.

Afshin Sohail told that she had a Ph.D. thesis on solid waste management and people were joining her now in the initiative and it was becoming a caravan.

Explaining about the project, Afshin told that a representative of the NGO will visit the house one day a week to pick up trash.

She added that the quantity of the garbage handed over to them would earn points and on the weekend, these points could be encashed.

The Cash The Trash has designated bags of four colors for dumping waste.

The yellow color is designated for plastic, blue for iron and steel, brown for paper, and green for skins of fruits and vegetables.

Afshin said that they are working to improve solid waste management in Karachi using smart communication technology.

Cash The Trash head said that as a pilot project, the service has been initially launched in Karachi University Campus. She added that the service would soon be expanded to other areas of the metropolis soon.

We are also developing a smartphone application through which users can register themselves, she told.

Afshin said that they provide comprehensive information to the customers and link them with the system from where they can redeem trash into cash.
