Aurat March 2022: Mahwash Ajaz presents understandable ‘manifesto for women rights’ in Pakistan

Journalist Mahwash Ajaz presented an 'understandable' manifesto for women rights in Pakistan ahead of Aurat March 2022 on March 8.

Ahead of Aurat March 2022 to observe International Women’s Day on March 8, Mahwash Ajaz, a journalist from Khaleej Times, presented her own manifesto for women rights in Pakistan which is understandable for everyone.

This year’s Aurat March 2022 manifesto is the talk of the town now after its organisers have unveiled their charter of demands titling it, “Reimagining Justice”.

Mahwash Ajaz wrote on Twitter, “If I had to write a manifesto for #womensrights in #Pakistan, I’d make it super simple. No flowery mumbo jumbo. I’d make it basic enough for everyone to understand. For everyone to be a part of it and chant together.”

Mahwash Ajaz’s version of demands for women rights in Pakistan is here:

  1. Ensure clean, safe schools for girls and educational facilities where women can study. Educating the girl child should be a priority for every parent.
  2. Public transport should be made safer, cleaner, easier for women across the country.
  3. Underage women should not be allowed to work as housemaids/workers in any capacity.
  4. End sex-work and ensure that women are protected and kept safe from those who want to sell their bodies.
  5. Those who demand dowry should be made to walk the streets with a placard of ‘gold diggers’ around their necks.
  6. Women should be given equal pay in all sectors of society.
  7. End honor killings. No murderer should be pardoned. No murderer who has killed in the name of honor should be able to walk free.
  8. Install CCTV cameras across the country, encourage women to learn self-defense.
  9. Educate children, women about fighting, combating sexual abuse and sexual harassment. Ensure clear cut processes and easy access to lawyers and psychological help for those going through this trauma at school/family level.
  10. Domestic/sex abuse shelters, helplines, counselors, legal aid should be state’s responsibility. Women’s shelters across the country should be established along with expert female doctors/physicians who can assist survivors of abuse and violence.

She included one more demand to the manifesto, “Also. Public toilets should be clean & safe. As well as providing childcare rooms in various points across the city for working mothers to rest or feed their kids. This will enable young mothers who want to be free from abusive marriages to get independent & financially stable.”
