Karachi Man Reaches Court to Seek Permission to Smoke Hashish

“I am a poor man. Only innocent people smoke it but the police trouble them”, the petitioner said.

KARACHI: A local of Karachi reached Sindh High Court (SHC) to seek permission for smoking hashish publicly and keeping a meager quantity of the drug, only 10 grams.

The court however rejected the petition filed by a local named Ghulam Asghar on Friday.

During the hearing, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar asked, “ Do you want the whole country to smoke hashish?”

Responding to this, the petitioner maintained that it was an application of public interest. He said, “I am a poor man. Only innocent people smoke hashish but the police trouble them”.

He contended various countries in the world that have allowed citizens to keep a certain quantity of the drug.

The judge expressed that the petitioner must go to such countries where smoking hashish was not prohibited.
The applicant noted that permission would generate revenue for the country too.

Justice Mazhar said that the revenue could be generated and increase through other means as well and disposed of the petition.

Ministry of Law and Justice, the federal government, and others were made respondents in the case.
