Medical Students in Sindh Decry Admissions as Deadline Pass

The future of thousands of medical students in Sindh is at stake as they could not get admissions in the medical and dental colleges due to the revised policy of the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC).

A number of aspiring doctors are planning to pursue learning aboard owing to which the local institutions could suffer a heavy loss.
PMC has set criteria for obtaining at least 60% marks in Medical and Dental College Admissions Test (MDCAT).
Pakistan Association of Private Medical and Dental Institution (PAMI) – Sindh Chapter has written a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan to draw his attention to the issue.
In this regard, PAMI -Sindh Chapter President Dr Razi said that thousands of students would get deprive of admissions owing to the new policy of PMC.
He doubted that many private medical colleges in Sindh may get close due to financial issues if the deadline for admissions is not extended.
Dr Razi complained that the government is not taking notice of the issue despite that they have informed it about the whole situation.
The official said that the last date of admissions was February 15.
However, PMC set the passing marks threshold in the MDCAT test at 60% owing to which several students could not make it to the institutions.
Dr Razi told some 12 private medical and dental colleges were earmarked 740 seats.
However, only 109 students managed to fulfill the criteria set by PMC.

The official expressed concern about some 631 seats still lying vacant in different institutions.
“The new policy has left hundreds of medical students disappointed and they are preparing to take admissions in foreign medical colleges”, he told.
Dr Razi demanded resetting passing marks criteria to 40% along with an extension in the admission date.
