Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro Vice-Chancellor (VC) has started violating rules and regulations and the verdict of the apex court as the ad-hoc registrar has not been sacked from the office after completing tenure.
News360 learned that MUET Registrar Abdul Waheed Umrani, who is a professor of the Telecommunication Department, is still holding the office even after completing tenure.
It has also been disclosed that Dr Umrani was appointed as MUET registrar in 2016 and that too without any following due procedure.
In August 2019, the registrar had completed the term but the VC exercised special powers and extended the tenure until the appointment of a new registrar.
It has been nearly 20 months now but MUET has not advertised the post for the appointment of a permanent official and the important position is being run on an ad-hoc basis.
This is not the first case of violation of SC’s verdict regarding the reappointment of the retired employees as well as Sindh Universities’ Law (Amendment) Act-2013.
The blue-eyed official has been enjoying incentives and allowances for nearly 20 months with the illicit support of the varsity’s VC.
Umrani had also been on the radar of the anti-corruption unit (ACU) in the corruption scandal in the MUET Khairpur campus while audit report 2018-19 had also disclosed financial irregularities under him.
Meanwhile, the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) had protested the appointment of Dr Umrani back in 2016.
The teachers’ body had maintained that the deployment of the registrar was a violation of the agreement between the Sindh government and FAPUASA in 2015.
