Minor Boy Dies at Karachi’s Memon Medical Institute

A minor boy died at Karachi’s Memon Medical Institute (MMI) as the patient was made to wait for the treatment.

The two-year-old Meesam Abbasi, who hailed from Khairpur, was not rendered timely treatment owing to which he passed away.

The victim’s family staged a protest outside the healthcare facility.

The family members said that the two-year-old had drunk a poisonous substance after which he was rushed to MMI on Wednesday.

They claimed that the victim was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the same night. However, he was later discharged.

Meesam’s condition started deteriorating on Wednesday’s noon and he was retaken to MMI.

However, owing to the delay in treatment, the minor died. The victim’s family staged a protest outside the healthcare facility until late at night.

The victim’s father, Jaman Bhutto said the hospital had transformed into a butcher.

He accused that the MMI staff did not cooperate with them and Meesam eventually passed away.

The father said that his child’s condition was normal and they had come to the healthcare facility for a normal check-up.

However, Jaman Bhutto said he was returning with the body of his son.

“Whoever comes here (MMI) returns with a dead body”, the aggrieved father said.

Following an hours-long protest, the hospital management held negotiations with the victim’s family and assured them of action after which the family left for its hometown with the body.

Human Rights activist Agha Shah Zaman said that the scope of the protest would be expanded if MMI management would abstain from its commitment to conduct a probe into the matter.

The death of the minor boy is not the first case of negligence at Karachi’s Memon Medical Institute.

Last month, a young girl had also succumbed to wounds and died after she was denied treatment at the healthcare facility due to non-payment of charges.
