NAB Chairman Retirement Heats up Political Temperature

The opposition parties have accused Justice (R) Javed Iqbal of carrying out the wishes of the PTI-led government however he was appointed during the reign of PML-N in 2017

As NAB expedites its actions before the retirement of the incumbent chairman due next month, it has ordered the Lahore administration to auction the properties of ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif to recover £8 million.

Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif was convicted in Avenfield reference by an Islamabad accountability court in 2018. He was awarded 10 years imprisonment and a fine of £8 million.

In the same case, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz was awarded 7 years imprisonment along with a £2 million fine.

The fine is equivalent to Rs 1.85 billion which the anti-graft watchdog will recover by selling properties.

The related deputy commissioners (DCs) have been asked to start making arrangements for the bidding process.

The decision to finally auction the properties after they were confiscated has come couple of weeks before the retirement of Justice (R) Javed Iqbal who is completing his 4-year-tenure on October 8.

In recognition of his services, a NAB press release said that as much as Rs 538 billion were recovered during the tenure of the outgoing chairman.

The government, so far, has not disclosed whether it will give an extension to Justice (R) Javed Iqbal but notably, the process of consultation for the appointment of a new chairman hasn’t begun between the prime minister and opposition leader.

Further, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and President Shehbaz Sharif headed an organizational meeting for the Gujranwala division yesterday.

The party’s chief lampooned the Army again and reiterated the demand for free and fair polls in the country while Maryam Nawaz called for unity within the ranks of the party without falling prey to contradictions of narratives.

Speaking in the session of the National Assembly (NA) on the same day, PML-N President and Leader of Opposition Shehbaz Sharif hurled brickbats at the government.

The opposition and treasury members have also intensified their attacks against each other as the NAB chairman is inching closer to his retirement.
