Oath administration of Punjab CM likely to be delayed again

Oath administration of Hamza Shehbaz as the Punjab CM could be delayed again as matter is likely to be resolved by the SC now.

LAHORE: The oath administration of Hamza Shehbaz as the Punjab CM could be delayed again as the matter is likely to be resolved by the Supreme Court (SC) as per the opinion of the legal experts.

Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti had suggested Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema administer the oath to Hamza Shehbaz as the chief minister by himself or through a representative till April 28 under Article 255.

The LHC CJ announced the verdict on the petition of Hamza Shahbaz. The verdict said that the constitution immediately proposes to form a federal or provincial government and the president and the governor were constitutionally bound to administer the oath.

The verdict stated that neither the president nor the governor has the authority to delay the oath administration to the chief minister and no provision has been made in the Constitution for such delay.

It added that Punjab has been running without a government for the last 25 days, therefore the court suggested the governor complete the process of administering the oath to the new chief minister.

The court suggested that the Governor of Punjab should administer the oath to the new chief minister himself or through a representative and the court has suggested that the Governor should take the oath of the new Chief Minister by April 28.

The judgment said that the court expects the president to play its constitutional role in the situation in Punjab.

Legal experts said the court did not order the president or the governor, and in the current situation, the court has suggested completing the oath process by April 28, now that it has suggested that the president and the governor have the authority to act accordingly or not.

The oath ceremony of Hamza Shehbaz could be delayed again as Speaker Punjab Assembly Pervaiz Elahi summoned a session of the Punjab Assembly today at 11:30 am to hold voting on a no-confidence motion against the deputy speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari.
